Techno is a genre of electronic dance music (EDM) that emerged in Detroit, Michigan in the mid-to-late 1980s. It is characterized by:
A 4/4 beat (four beats per measure), usually driven by a bass drum on every beat.
A tempo generally between 120–150 BPM.
Heavy use of synthesizers, drum machines (especially Roland TR-808 and TR-909), and sequencers.
A focus on rhythm and texture rather than melody or vocals (though these can appear).
A futuristic, mechanical, or industrial aesthetic—early Detroit techno artists were inspired by Afrofuturism, science fiction, and the idea of technology reshaping human experience.
The first wave of techno was pioneered by the “Belleville Three” (Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson) in Detroit, who fused electronic sounds from Europe (Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder) with funk, house, and African-American music traditions.
Over time, techno branched into many subgenres: minimal techno, acid techno, industrial techno, dub techno, hard techno, etc.—each with different moods and production styles, but all rooted in that stripped-down, machine-driven groove.
So to put it simply:👉 Techno is a rhythmic, machine-driven form of electronic dance music, born in Detroit, designed for dancing, and built around repetition, texture, and futuristic sound design.
